Liposuction is a procedure in which stubborn deposits of excess fat are removed from targeted areas of the body. However, for many people, liposuction is simply inadequate to address the bodily changes brought about by things such as significant weight loss and pregnancy. When excess skin, stretch marks, and loose muscles combine with excess deposits of fat, a tummy tuck becomes the better option.
When it comes to deciding between a tummy tuck and liposuction, it’s best to consider your needs and goals. Each procedure is designed to create very specific changes.
Patients who are in need of reduction of excess fat and sagging skin in the abdominal area would be better served with a tummy tuck. This is also the case with patients who have stretch marks in certain areas or sagging abdominal muscles that create a visible bulge.
Patients who have small amounts of excess stubborn fat in areas of the body other than the abdomen are better candidates for liposuction. Additionally, patients with small amounts of abdominal fat but no sagging skin or muscles are excellent candidates for liposuction.
During the consultation, Dr. Rai will ask patients some questions about their health and goals. Patients can get a tummy tuck or a liposuction depending on their answers. If the case calls for it, they may need to do both.
Tummy tucks involve trimming away excess skin with a scalpel, tightening loose abdominal muscles with internal sutures, and removing fat with targeted liposuction. Fat and skin can be removed from multiple areas of the patient’s abdomen. The tummy tuck sculpts and contours the abdomen for improved definition.
Liposuction is all about removing stubborn deposits of fat directly from one or more target spots. This is done with the use of a tool called a cannula, which is inserted through a small incision. The cannula’s end loosens the fat from the surrounding tissues. Medical suction is then applied to remove the fat cells from the body.
Liposuction cannot address loose skin, sagging muscle tissue, or stretch marks. Because of this, it is best for patients who do not have a great deal of sagging skin. Patients with lax skin may require a lift procedure following their liposuction surgery.
Abdominoplasty cannot address fat in other areas of the body, so in cases where there is excess fat in areas like the buttocks, back, thighs, or chin, liposuction is an excellent option.

Tummy tuck vs Liposuction. Tummy tucks are more intensive procedures than liposuction. While lipo only removes excess fat, a tummy tuck reconstructs the muscles of the abdomen and removes excess skin.
